First, define the baseline. I found that if I strike about 1/64" from the scribed line with the chisel bevel facing away from the line that it will pull towards the line. I then place the chisel in the original scribed line and strike again. The first chisel mark provides a relief area for the wood from the second strike. It seems to help preserve the base line.
