How I learned to cut dovetails by hand
First I had to cut a straight line.
The baseline is set.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
Now pare down to the baseline.
My first few practice dovetails
First waste area cleared.
I start with laying out the pins first.
They have a flat baseline.
Laying out the center pin.
Six pin boards completed.
Here the pins are layed out.
Now lay out the tails.
Set the depth on the marking gauge.
This is how I get a real sharp pencil.
My trick to keep the marking gauge straight.
After cutting the tails, saw out the edge waste.
Now the baseline is scribed.
Then cope out the waste in the center.
I cut the pins first.
After a little chiseling the first set is done.
Now the pins are cut.
Don't forget to match up the sides.
Cope out the waste.
One side is complete.
This is what it looks like after the pins are coped out.
It's easy to mark the second tail board.
Now I am ready to chisel.
Two drawer carcasses complete!
My Favorite Chisel
Plane off the little bit of the tails and pins that are standing proud.
First, define the baseline.
Ready to sand and finish.
